Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble

NSYWE is accepting applications for 2020-2021. We are looking forward to another NSYWE season filled with music, friendship, and joy. The NSYWE is led by Artistic Director Dr. Mark Hopkins, Acadia University School of Music. NSYWE members improve their music skills through an extensive program of coaching and mentoring by skilled educators and professional musicians during each rehearsal weekend.

Auditions were due May 31, 2020 but we are still accepting auditions for some instruments; e-mail Hope Gendron to find out if you may still audition.

Tentative dates and venues for the 2020-2021 season are on the website.

Please see this message from Artistic Director Dr. Mark Hopkins regarding planning for the 2020-2021 season.

Some additional thoughts during these special times, for those considering joining NSYWE for 2020-2021:

  • No applicant will be turned away for financial reasons. These are tough times and NSYWE will find a way to accommodate you.
  • If you left your instrument at school, or if you’re a percussionist that does not have access to instruments, we will give you extra time to complete your audition.
  • We can arrange a video chat with one of our clinicians for anyone requiring help with the audition process.
  • To join NSYWE, complete the  online application form; within a few days, NSYWE will e-mail your website registration information – including a temporary password.

NSYWE is a team! We work together, share a common goal and creative ideas, and support one another.

Please email Hope Gendron at nsywe@eastlink.ca if you have any questions or concerns, or for any information on the above points.

Welcome to the Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble website. The NSYWE is Nova Scotia’s honours wind ensemble for talented young musicians from junior high school to university age.

The NSYWE’s mandate is, …”to provide a high-quality educational experience for talented young musicians in a manner and of a quality otherwise not available to them.”

Each season, the NSYWE meets for three weekends in the late summer and fall, including boot camp, and present a fall concert. The team re-groups in the new year for three more weekends and presents a winter season finale concert during the third weekend.

Approximately 60 musicians play in the NSYWE. Prospective members submit recorded auditions in the spring and those who are accepted into the ensemble are invited to attend a weekend boot camp in late summer.

The NSYWE is fortunate to have an ongoing relationship with the Stadacona Band and will collaborate with them on our 2021 winter concert. Their leadership and role models create an exceptional partnership and environment for hands-on learning and skill development.

If you have any questions or just need to chat, please do not hesitate to email me, Hope Gendron, at: nsywe@eastlink.ca.

Thank you!
