Does it cost anything to be a member of the Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble?
The NSYWE Season Fee – covering one school year – is $300. NSYWE uses these fees to pay for music and conductors, some concert venues, and rehearsal weekend snacks. As well, clinicians are hired during the rehearsal weekends to provide sectional music lessons to members. Members also receive an NSYWE t-shirt.
What’s not included in the season fee?
Transportation and accommodation expenses are the member’s responsibility.
While NSYWE provides snacks – fruit, cookies, etc., during rehearsal weekends, we cannot provide meals. Students must provide their own breakfast, lunch and dinner.
NSYWE tries to find vegan, nut-free and gluten-free snacks for members requiring such options. Please advise Hope Gendron of any special dietary needs.
Each member must bring a reusable water container; NSYWE does not supply bottled water for rehearsals and concerts. Students who bring disposable water bottles must remove those bottles at the end of each rehearsal or concert.
When do I need to pay the season fee? May I pay in installments?
Your fee should be paid during the NSYWE boot camp weekend, which happens in late August or early September. If you need more time, arrangements can be made; speak with Hope Gendron. Payment can be made by cash, personal cheque, e-transfer or Visa/MasterCard/American Express.
While the annual fee is lower than many sports activities, it might still be a lot of money for my family. Is there a scholarship or bursary available? If so, how do I apply?
NSYWE offers a bursary program; up to three full or partial bursaries may be awarded each year. To apply for the bursary, please complete the bursary application form. All bursary applications must be received by the annual NSYWE application deadline.
My brother or sister is in the ensemble, is there any “family rate” or do does each of us need to pay the full season fee?
We automatically apply discounted rates for families with more than one member in the NSYWE. Please contact Hope Gendron for more details.
I don’t live in Halifax or Wolfville, how do I get there and where do I stay?
Members are responsible for making their own travel and accommodation arrangements for practice and concert weekends. Carpooling may be arranged through NSYWE’s Facebook page. NSYWE does not arrange billeting for members.
Tell me more about the contract I need to sign.
Every member accepted into the NSYWE must sign a contract saying they will abide by the ensemble’s policies and behaviour criteria. Parents/guardians of members who have not reached the age of majority (19 years of age) must co-sign the contract. A breach of the contract could result in your dismissal from the ensemble or being barred from performing at a concert. Members who are disciplined this way do not receive any or all of their season fee refund.
For an overview of what’s in the contract, please read this short synopsis.
May I miss a rehearsal or concert because I’m working or representing my school in sports?
Life happens, we know. If you find that you are unable to attend a rehearsal or concert, please advise Hope Gendron as much in advance as possible. Missing a rehearsal or concert without providing notice could be grounds for suspension or dismissal from the NSYWE; no full or partial season fee refund would be available under these circumstances.
May I be a member of other orchestras such as the Nova Scotia Junior Wind Ensemble, Honours Jazz, Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, etc.?
NSYWE goes out of its way to co-ordinate its rehearsals and concerts with other music ensembles in the region. We understand that overlaps sometimes occur and we expect members in these situations to advise Hope Gendron as soon as they become aware of such a conflict. If this becomes a chronic problem, members may be asked to choose one ensemble over another; NSYWE would not issue any refunds in such a situation so please keep that in mind before committing to multiple ensembles.
I am a former NSYWE member; may I still access the website?
Sure, with some limitations. You will have access to photos/videos and such bu you will lose access to the music, for copyright reasons. If you do not access the website for more than a year, your account may be deleted for security reasons. If you wish to regain access to the site, please contact Hope Gendron.
